This shoulder press counter doesn't watch how far your elbow bends. It watches how high your upper arm rises against your torso. The weights travel from your shoulders to overhead and back, and each round trip is one rep.
That's why your hips matter as much as your hands here. Press with both arms together, or use one-hand mode and let the coach hand you over to the other side.
Phone setup
Put the phone upright at chest height. Step back until your hips and your arms at full lockout both fit in the frame.
Square up to the lens. Your hips have to stay visible for the whole set, because the count is measured from them.
- If your wrists disappear above the top of the frame when you press, take another step back.
Form cues
- Start at your shoulders. The weights rest beside your shoulders with your elbows under your wrists, and each rep ends back there.
- Press straight overhead. Drive the dumbbells up until your upper arms are raised high beside your ears.
- Keep your ribs down. Arching your back to finish the press moves the load onto your lower back.
- Lower back to your shoulders. Returning to the start is what finishes the rep, so don't drop the weights halfway.
Common mistakes
- Hiding your hips. The count is anchored on them, so if they fall out of frame the angle can't be read. Step back until hips and overhead hands are both in view.
- Launching with your legs. A leg drive bounces your hips up and down in the shot. Plant your feet and press with the shoulders.
- Stopping at forehead height. The far position is a fully raised upper arm, so a short press isn't counted. Finish overhead before you lower.
How FitnessBruh counts it
The app measures the angle at your shoulder, between your hip, shoulder and elbow. It's the height of your upper arm against your torso that moves the count, not the bend in your elbow.
A rep starts with the weights at your shoulders, reaches the far position as you press overhead, and finishes when they are back at your shoulders. Since the angle is anchored on your hips, they need to remain in view.
Press one arm at a time in one-hand mode and the app watches just that arm until the coach calls the switch.
FAQ
Why does it need my hips in the frame?
The press is measured at the shoulder, between your hip, shoulder and elbow. Without the hip as an anchor there's no torso line to compare your upper arm against, so keep both hips visible.
Does bending my elbows more or less change the count?
Not directly. The count follows how high your upper arm is raised against your torso. Pressing overhead and returning to your shoulders is what registers as a rep.
Can I press one dumbbell at a time?
Yes. In one-hand mode the app watches a single arm, then hands over to the other side when the coach calls the switch, and the set finishes after both.
