Full sit ups only. That's the standard this sit up counter holds you to. A short crunch that lifts just your shoulder blades never reaches the top, so it doesn't count.
Lay the phone down sideways, lie back with your knees bent, and wait for the coach to say counting is live. Each rep is called out loud once you lower back down, so you can focus on the movement itself.
Phone setup
About 2 meters (6 feet) from where you'll lie, set the phone on the floor in landscape. Make sure your whole body, head to feet, shows up inside the frame.
Lie side-on to the phone with your knees bent and feet flat. Keep the phone sideways; held upright, the workout screen asks you to rotate it.
- Keep your knees bent and your feet flat from the first sit up to the last.
Form cues
- Lie back first. Settling onto your back before the first rep is what lets counting begin.
- Plant your feet. Your ankles stay put on the floor, and the angle is read from your shoulders through your hips to those ankles.
- Sit all the way up. The top of the sit up is the far position. A short crunch never gets there.
- Lower all the way down. Returning to the floor completes the rep, so don't hover halfway before the next one.
Common mistakes
- Tugging your head forward. Cross your arms over your chest or rest your fingertips by your temples, and lead with your chest instead of your neck.
- Crunching short. Lifting only your shoulder blades doesn't reach the top and won't count. Sit up until your torso is upright.
- Standing up mid-set. Getting up off the floor stops counting until you lie back down, so rest on your back, not on your feet.
How FitnessBruh counts it
The camera measures the angle running from your shoulders through your hips to your ankles. Because your ankles stay planted, it reads cleanly with bent knees.
Lying back is the start, sitting all the way up is the far position, and lowering all the way down completes the rep. A short crunch that only lifts your shoulder blades isn't counted.
Counting only starts after you've been lying back for a moment. Get up off the floor mid-set and it stops again until you lie back down.
FAQ
Why lay the phone down sideways for sit ups?
A sit up uses your full body length, so a phone in landscape on the floor, about 2 meters (6 feet) away, keeps you in view from head to feet as you rise and lower.
Does a crunch count as a sit up?
A crunch that only lifts your shoulder blades doesn't reach the top and won't count. Reverse crunches and double crunches have their own counters, built for those movements.
Will sitting up at the top stop the counting?
Not at all. Sitting up is the movement being counted. Only getting up off the floor halts it, and counting resumes once you lie back down.
