A squat counter has one big requirement: it needs to see your feet. Before this one counts anything, your knees and ankles have to be in the frame along with your hips and shoulders.
It's bodyweight only, with nothing else to set up. Stand a few steps back, turn slightly off-square, and the coach counts you through the set.
Phone setup
Prop the phone upright at chest height and step back until you can see yourself from head to feet in the preview.
Turn slightly sideways: not square to the phone, not fully side-on. A small angle keeps both legs visible.
- Your feet matter here. If your shoes fall out of the bottom of the frame, counting won't start.
Form cues
- Sit back and down. Push your hips back as if reaching for a chair, and let your knees bend with them.
- Knees follow your toes. Letting your knees track in line with your feet keeps the load on your quads and glutes.
- Drive through your heels. Standing all the way up completes the rep, so finish tall before starting the next one.
- Keep both feet in view. Your knee angle is read down to the ankles, so the feet are part of every rep.
Common mistakes
- Squatting too close to the phone. Your feet slide out of the shot and counting never starts. Back up until your shoes are inside.
- Standing square to the lens. Facing the phone head-on flattens the bend at your knees. Rotate a little so your side shows.
- Rising only halfway. A squat counts once you've gone down and come all the way back up to standing. Stand tall at the top.
How FitnessBruh counts it
The app measures the angle at each knee, between your hip, knee and ankle. Standing is the start position, going down bends the knee, and coming back up to standing finishes the rep.
The two legs are averaged into one reading. Counting won't begin until the camera has a steady view of your whole body, knees and ankles included, which is why feet matter more here than in an arm exercise.
Dip only partway and the rep is ignored, because the bottom position has to be reached before you stand back up.
FAQ
Why won't the squat counter start?
It needs a steady look at your whole body, knees and ankles included. Back up until your feet are inside the frame and hold still for a moment so the camera can lock on.
Does it average both legs or watch one?
It averages the two legs into a single reading, so keep them moving together. Squat evenly, with your weight balanced on both feet, and each rep reads as one smooth bend.
Do I need weights or a rack?
Neither. This is a bodyweight squat on a flat floor, and the only thing the camera reads is your knee angle, so there is nothing to set up beyond the phone.
