Overhead extensions are awkward for a camera because your head can hide the working arm. This tricep extension counter gets around that with a diagonal stance and a second check on your upper arm.
Hold one dumbbell in both hands behind your head, or switch to one-hand mode and work a single arm at a time. Either way, the coach announces each rep as your arms lock back out overhead.
Phone setup
Stand the phone upright at chest height and step back until your arms stay in frame when they are fully overhead.
Turn diagonally (halfway between facing the phone and standing side-on) so your head doesn't hide the arm doing the work.
- Test the overhead reach before your first set. If your hands leave the top of the frame, step back.
Form cues
- Keep the upper arm raised. It stays up beside your ear the whole time. The counter checks for exactly that.
- Lower behind your head. Let the dumbbell travel back until your elbows bend deeply, then drive it straight up again.
- Hold your elbows narrow. Flared elbows pull in the shoulders. Point them forward and let the triceps finish the lift.
- Press to straight. A rep isn't done until the elbow opens again, so end every press with your arms locked out overhead.
Common mistakes
- Letting the upper arm drop. While your upper arm is down, elbow bends aren't counted, so a curl or a press can't sneak in as a rep. Raise the arm and go again.
- Standing fully side-on. In full profile your head can cover the raised arm. Rotate back to the diagonal until both arms are visible.
- Stopping short of the top. A press that doesn't straighten the elbow leaves the rep unfinished. Reach all the way up.
How FitnessBruh counts it
Like the curls, this one reads the angle at your elbow, from shoulder to elbow to wrist. A rep starts with your arms straight overhead, goes down as the weight drops behind your head, and finishes when you press back to straight.
A second check makes this exercise special: your upper arm has to stay raised overhead. While it's down, elbow bends don't count, so curls and presses done in this mode don't add reps.
In one-hand mode the app tracks only the arm you picked, and the coach calls the switch when it's time for the other. Counting waits for a steady view of your shoulders and hips, so settle into your diagonal stance first.
FAQ
Do I need two dumbbells or just one?
One is enough. Hold it in both hands for the two-arm version, or in a single hand when you use one-hand mode. Choose a weight that lets you keep your upper arm raised.
Why does my stance matter for overhead extensions?
A diagonal stance, halfway between facing the phone and side-on, keeps your head from hiding the arm. The camera needs a clear view of the elbow to follow its bend.
Will curls or presses count as extension reps?
Not if your upper arm is down. Elbow bends only count while the arm is raised overhead, so a curl or a press from the side adds nothing to the total.
